Medical residents are unsung heros. 🩺🇹🇿

🩺 Residency in Tanzania is gruelling, usually through a Master of Medicine (MMed) programme (if accepted and financially possible), lasting 3–5 years depending on specialty and successful completion.

🌍 Tanzania has about 68.6 million people, with roughly 0.1 physicians per 1,000 people, that’s around 10 doctors per 100,000 people.

🏥 Residents are not just “trainees.” They are critical members of the workforce.

🚨 Their responsibilities include ward rounds, emergency admissions, theatre cases, 24/7 on-calls, research presentations, exams, and teaching.

👨🏾‍⚕️👩🏽‍⚕️ Residents are often the doctors who spend the most time with local medical students and our international interns.

🧠 For our interns, residents help navigate clinical reasoning, investigations, treatment plans, local protocols, and critical decision-making in resource-limited settings.

📚 Many work long clinical weeks while simultaneously preparing for specialist examinations and completing research requirements and carrying their own personal commitments.

📈 Tanzania has increased medical school output dramatically over the past two decades, with doctor numbers increasing roughly sevenfold compared with the early 1990s.

🙏🏾 Their contribution matters to us. Clinical exchange depend on the time, patience, and expertise of many people including these doctors already carrying huge workloads and personal sacrifices.
